(MENAFN- UkrinForm) U.S. President-elect Donald trump has suggested deploying European troops to Ukraine to monitor a ceasefire agreement. However, a concrete plan for this initiative has yet to be developed.
That is according to Suspilne , citing The Wall Street Journal and reported by Ukrinform.
Sources say Trump wants Europe to take the lead in supporting and defending Ukraine, highlighting the possibility of involving European forces in a peacekeeping role.
Currently, the proposal remains in early discussions, with key details - such as which countries might participate, the composition and size of the forces, and the U.S.'s role - still undecided. Trump's transition team is reportedly drafting initial proposals, with major decisions expected following consultations with U.S. allies and potentially Russian President Vladimir Putin.
French officials emphasize that the initiative would require at least minimal backing from the United States.
According to sources, Trump has also urged European leaders to exert more pressure on China to influence Russia to cease its aggression. One suggestion involves using trade tariffs against China should it fail to support peace efforts.

Any European forces deployed to Ukraine, officials stress, would not operate under NATO's banner to avoid provoking direct confrontation with Russia. Instead, they might function as part of a peacekeeping mission or a monitoring group.
European governments, however, are wary of being drawn into a conflict with Russia, and the Kremlin is likely to reject any plan involving foreign troops in Ukraine. There are additional concerns that Russia could exploit a ceasefire to regroup its forces for renewed offensives.
As previously reported by Ukrinform, Trump recently criticized Ukraine for its alleged use of American missiles to strike Russian territory last month.
