Israel places troops to safeguard region with Syria

(MENAFN) The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on Sunday that it has deployed troops to the buffer zone along the Syrian border, primarily to secure Israel's safety and defend the Golan Heights, which it has occupied since 1967. This move follows a rapid jihadist offensive that has seen armed groups, including Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, seize control of significant territories in Syria, including the capital, Damascus.

The IDF clarified that its actions are focused on maintaining the buffer zone and are not intended to interfere with Syria’s internal matters. "The IDF will continue to operate as needed to protect Israel and its civilians," the statement emphasized.

Israeli tanks have reportedly entered the buffer zone near Quneitra, adjacent to the Golan Heights. Artillery strikes have been launched, though their specific targets remain unclear. Local sources reported that Israeli patrols entered Khan Arnabah in Quneitra province, resulting in the death of a local man.

Israel has frequently conducted airstrikes in Syria, targeting border areas and military sites, often citing the need to disrupt Iranian operations in the region. Iranian officials, however, have accused the US and Israel of coordinating the jihadist offensive, claiming that the timing of the attacks in northern Syria follows Israel’s ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah.

The situation in Syria remains fluid as jihadist forces consolidate control over key regions, including the capital.
