Reddit launches AI-powered 'Reddit answers' feature to compete with search engines

(MENAFN) On Monday, Reddit revealed it would pilot a new AI-driven feature called "Reddit Answers," which utilizes an AI model to generate summaries from existing Reddit threads to address user inquiries, according to Reuters.

The feature works by scanning through Reddit’s extensive pool of community discussions and comments. When users pose questions, Reddit Answers delivers summaries of pertinent conversations, along with links to related posts and communities.

This move could place Reddit in competition with both traditional search engines like Google and emerging AI-powered search platforms such as those by OpenAI and Perplexity. However, while other companies gather data from across the web, Reddit Answers focuses solely on content within Reddit.

Reddit Answers is currently in an early-access phase. The feature’s initial rollout will be limited to English-speaking users in the United States, with plans to expand to additional languages and regions later.

Reddit's journey with generative AI has been eventful. In April 2023, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman disclosed that the company would begin charging large corporations for access to its API for AI training, emphasizing the significant value of its 18 years' worth of human-generated content.
