(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel macron confirmed on Thursday that he would remain in office until his term ends in 2027, despite ongoing Political challenges. He also announced plans to appoint a new prime Minister within days after Michel Barnier’s resignation, following a historic no-confidence vote in the National Assembly. This marked the shortest tenure for a prime minister in modern French history, with only one previous government being ousted—Georges Pompidou's in 1962.
In his address, Macron criticized both the left-wing New Popular Front (NPF) and the right-wing National Rally (RN) for forming what he called an "anti-Republican front" and rejected calls for his resignation. He emphasized that he would fulfill his mandate and ruled out new elections until at least July, as stipulated by the French constitution, which does not require the president to step down if the government is ousted.
Macron had previously stated his intention to remain president until 2027, despite the outcome of the summer parliamentary elections, which saw his party’s minority government struggle. He appointed Barnier in September, which angered the NPF, leading to the political standoff. The crisis deepened with Barnier's proposal to cut social security spending and raise taxes to address France's massive deficit, resulting in opposition threats and a no-confidence vote.
Despite the political fractures in the country, Macron holds the power to appoint a new prime minister and will do so after Barnier stays on as a caretaker until a replacement is found. However, no new parliamentary vote is possible for at least a year, according to the French constitution.
