Rare Roman coin featuring portrait of Brutus sells for USD2.08M at auction

(MENAFN) A rare Roman coin featuring the portrait of Brutus, the assassin of Julius Caesar, was sold for 1.98 million euros (USD2.08 million) at a Geneva auction on Monday, according to Numismatica Genevensis, the organizer of the event. This coin, which holds significant historical value, attracted considerable attention due to its unique connection to one of the most pivotal moments in Roman history—the assassination of Julius Caesar.

The coin was purchased by a European collector after a highly competitive bidding process. Eight online bidders participated in the auction, driving the price up to more than 1.83 million Swiss francs (approximately USD2.09 million). The auctioneer had initially priced the coin at over 800,000 euros, but its final sale price far exceeded expectations, reflecting the high demand for rare and historically important items.

Brutus, who is depicted on the coin, played a central role in the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BCE, a dramatic event that marked a turning point in Roman history. Coins from this period are particularly sought after by collectors and historians due to their rarity and the historical figures they represent. This coin's sale is a testament to the continued fascination with ancient Roman history and the lasting legacy of figures like Brutus.

The auction of this coin underscores the strong market for ancient Roman artifacts, particularly those with a direct connection to key historical events. As collectors and institutions around the world continue to seek such items, rare coins like this one remain highly prized, both for their historical significance and their investment potential.
