BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. We have
witnessed in a very short period that COP29 has been organized in a
really important way, facilitating dialogue, the Assistant to the
President of the US and National Climate Advisor of the White House
Ali Zaidi said at the 29th session of the conference of the Parties
to the UN Framework convention on Climate Change (COP29), Trend reports.
He expressed hope that COP29 will be a platform to further build
on the confidence built in Dubai and reflected in the UAE's
consensus to openly talk about the need to start moving away from
fossil fuels.
“I hope that this will be a COP event where progress will be
made on the Dubai goals of tripling the use of renewable energy. I
am confident that the world can move forward by rallying around
important ambitions," the US President's aide emphasized.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN
Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will last
until November 22, was opened at the Baku Olympic Stadium on
November 11. The event is the largest organized by Azerbaijan to
date and is the first time the region has hosted the event in
Azerbaijan.
The highest-level event, the summit of world leaders on climate
action, will be held within the framework of COP29 on November
12–13.
The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and
ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate
finance.
In addition to making climate finance a top priority and setting
the stage for action, this will also contribute to meeting the
1.5°C commitment by bringing everyone together.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement
signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous
human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP
(Conference of Parties) stands for“Conference of Parties” and is
the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the
Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless
otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first
COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is
located in Bonn.
