Saipem Unveils First Full-Scale Prototype Of Xolarsurf
The prototype, developed in collaboration with Norwegian manufacturer Kystteknikk and other partners, was successfully launched at sea at Kystteknikk's facility in Dyrvik, located at the mouth of the Trondheim fjord in Norway.
Engineered to withstand waves up to 8 meters, the XolarSurf prototype marks a significant milestone in its development. The floater will remain at sea for approximately one year, during which its performance and energy production capacity will be thoroughly monitored.
XolarSurf was developed by Moss Maritime, Saipem's Norwegian subsidiary specializing in offshore design and engineering. The solution leverages a modularized structure, with solar panels mounted on floaters specifically designed for marine environments. Each "island" in the system consists of smaller interconnected floaters, providing a stable and flexible base for the photovoltaic panels. The prototype is capable of generating up to 35–45 kWp of installed power per floater, offering scalable production for large-scale energy generation.
This modular approach to offshore solar power generation promises cost reductions and enhanced scalability, positioning XolarSurf as a key innovation in the growing field of ocean-based renewable energy.
