BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 7. A second
briefing on the COP29 meeting and its planning was delivered by the
Azerbaijan Operational Company COP29 for the diplomatic corps
accredited in Azerbaijan, a source in the company told Trend .
According to the source, the briefing was attended by the
Chairperson of the Board of the Azerbaijan Operational Company
COP29 and Chief Operating Officer Narmin Jarchalova, Deputy Chief
of the Protocol Service of the President of Azerbaijan Ramin
Taghiyev, Director of the conference Affairs Department of the UN
Framework convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Vasim Mir, and
representative of the UN Security Department Kevin O'Hanlon.
Over 150 diplomats, including heads of diplomatic missions
active in Azerbaijan as well as representatives of the diplomatic
corps accredited in the country and abroad, joined the interactive
hybrid-format briefing.
In her detailed presentation at the briefing, the Chairperson of
the Board, Chief Operating Officer of the Azerbaijan Operational
Company COP29 Narmin Jarchalova elaborated on the key events
included in the COP29 process calendar, the intensive preparatory
work being conducted across various areas, the spatial distribution
of COP29 goals at the Baku Olympic Stadium, where the conference
will be held, and the infrastructure developments in progress.
Detailed information was provided on the progress of creating
the“Blue Zone”, the venue for all official events, and the“Green
Zone," which will bring together various parties for innovative
climate approaches.
It was also mentioned in the briefing that everything is
proceeding as planned.
Diplomats attending the briefing were informed that several
steps have been taken to ensure the effective and smooth
organization of participation in COP29.
Thus, the registration process for the conference managed by the
UNFCCC, the launch of a special COP29 visa service, accreditation
of media representatives, registration of radio-electronic
equipment, allocation of temporary radio spectrum, infrastructure
reservations, and spaces provided for organizing events in the
COP29“Green Zone," and detailed information were shared about
portals created for booking translation services.
Progress was reported on transportation, accommodation,
catering, and additional planned measures.
The briefing pointed out that one of the main objectives of the
operational company throughout all stages of ongoing activities is
to maintain the environmental impact and carbon footprint at an
acceptable minimum.
Deputy Chief of the Protocol Service of the President of
Azerbaijan Ramin Taghiyev addressed protocol issues related to
welcoming, accommodation, and transportation arrangements for heads
of state and government and official delegations that will visit
Baku for the World Summit on Climate Action within COP29.
Diplomats were informed about the operations of Heydar Aliyev
International Airport, urban transportation during the event, and
the agenda of the World Summit on Climate Action.
The event carried on with talks and a Q&A session on
subjects that piqued the interest of the attendees and those tuned
in remotely.
This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was
made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last
year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive
about 70–80,000 foreign guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an
agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992
to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system.
COP-the Conference of the Parties-is the highest legislative body
overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on
Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the
Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held
annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Germany's
Berlin with its secretariat in Bonn.
