UN Refugee Agency Urges Transparency After Deadly Shipwreck Off Greece
(MENAFN) The UN refugee agency expressed deep concern on Wednesday after at least 15 people died in a shipwreck near Chios island in Greece, calling for full transparency.
According to reports, the incident also left 24 others injured, including children, women, and men. While the exact circumstances of the shipwreck are still being investigated, the agency emphasized the importance of "full clarity and transparency" in cases involving lifesaving operations at sea.
UNHCR personnel are present at local hospitals, assisting survivors by providing interpretation and legal support where needed.
The agency noted that such tragedies are not uncommon. Between 2015 and 2025, at least 3,148 people died or went missing in the Aegean Sea while attempting to cross, highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by migrants.
"These tragedies are preventable," UNHCR said, urging governments to tackle the conflicts and root causes driving people to risk dangerous journeys, increase support for countries hosting refugees, and expand legal migration pathways. The agency added that saving lives at sea "is a legal and humanitarian imperative," calling for coordinated international action to prevent further deaths.
