BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 6. Climate change
often leads to violations of human rights, Deputy Chairperson of
the Union of Judges of Azerbaijan, Chairman of the Civil Collegium
of the Supreme Court Sanan Hajiyev told reporters, Trend reports.
He noted that every person has the right to live in a healthy
environment.
“All basic principles related to this right are directly related
to the protection of human health. Climate change ultimately
hinders normal human vitality. Therefore, we, as lawyers, must do
our part to address this issue by sensitizing the legal community
to the challenges taking place around the world,” he said.
The decree signed by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev
declared 2024 the“Year of Solidarity for a Green World” and that
Azerbaijan, will hold such an important event as COP29 in November.
Hajiyev emphasized that several legal documents were adopted within
the framework of the upcoming event.
“Law and climate are topics that constantly overlap. Climate
change in many cases leads to the violation of human rights. In
order to raise global public and academic awareness of the issues
surrounding climate change and the intersection of human rights,
and to engage the global public on the topic of climate and law, we
have organized a conference on the theme“Law and Climate.” The
conference brings together climate and law experts from several
countries around the world. Experts from almost twenty countries
and judges of the Supreme Court are taking part. We believe that
the conference will be very useful for the legal community,” he
added.
To note, Baku hosts an international conference on“Law &
Climate” organized by the Supreme Court and the Union of Judges of
Azerbaijan.
The event is attended by Chairperson of the Union of Judges
Ramiz Rzayev, President of COP29, Minister of Ecology and Natural
Resources Mukhtar Babayev, Chairperson of the Supreme Court Inam
Karimov, Ombudsperson of Azerbaijan Sabina Aliyeva, President of
the International Association of Judges Duro Sessa, Deputy
Chairperson of the Constitutional Court of Türkiye Basri Bagci and
others.
The event aims to draw the attention of the legal community to
the processes taking place in the world related to climate change
and to raise awareness of the existing instruments of international
and national legal regulation in this area.
The conference will feature discussions on such topics as“The
UN Framework Convention on Climate Change: Kyoto Protocol, Paris
Agreement, Doha Amendment”,“Climate Change and Human Rights:
Challenges and Legal Regulation,"“Specifics of Administration of
Justice by National and International Courts on Climate Change
Disputes,"“The Role of Combating Environmental Crime in Achieving
Climate Change-related Goals: International and National Context,”
and several other topics.
