UN Aims To Integrate Climate Action In Partnership With Azerbaijan - Resident Coordinator

(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 24. The UN aims to firmly integrate climate action in partnership with the Azerbaijani government, UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Vladanka Andreeva said during the "29 Climate Conversations: Road to COP29" media workshop in Baku, Trend reports.

She highlighted that the main goal is not only to support the COP29 chairmanship but also to engage all segments of Azerbaijani society, including the media, to mobilize their participation.

“We aim to ensure that climate action is firmly integrated into our partnership with the government, and we will actively promote it through our programs before, during, and after COP29,” she said.

Andreeva emphasized the UN's commitment to a successful COP29.

“From the UN's perspective, our primary goal is to support the host country and the COP29 chairmanship in all organizational and substantive aspects of this conference. Time is running out. COP29 is now about 79 days away, and the conference chairmanship team has had only about 10 and a half months to prepare for this massive event. As part of the larger UN family, we are working on many different fronts.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is supporting the COP29 presidency as they are the custodians of this climate conference. At the global level, we have also offered assistance through the UN Global Working Group,” she said.

This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive about 70-80,000 foreign guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP - the Conference of the Parties - is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
