Pentagon unveils worth of fatal arms sent to Ukraine

(MENAFN) The United States Department of Defense has disclosed that under President Joe Biden’s administration, which began in January 2021, the United States has provided over USD56.1 billion in “security assistance” to Ukraine. This substantial sum reflects the ongoing United States commitment to supporting Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia, which intensified in February 2022.

As President Biden’s term nears its end, the future of United States arms deliveries to Ukraine will largely depend on the outcome of the upcoming November election. Vice President Kamala Harris, who is anticipated to continue the current administration's policies, is expected to maintain the level of support for Ukraine if she wins. In contrast, Republican nominee Donald Trump has indicated that he might reduce or halt aid to Kyiv should he be elected.

According to a fact sheet released by the Pentagon on Monday, the total United States aid allocated to Ukraine since the onset of the conflict with Russia exceeds USD55.4 billion. The document details an extensive list of military equipment and supplies provided, including air defense systems, artillery, mortar systems, anti-tank and anti-ship missiles, tanks, helicopters, drones, and other critical battlefield hardware.

In addition to the extensive aid already provided, the Pentagon also announced a new aid package on Monday, valued at USD1.7 billion. This latest tranche includes air defense munitions, artillery and mortar rounds, small arms, and explosives. It marks the 62nd delivery of equipment from the Pentagon’s inventories to Ukraine since August 2021.

The passage of aid packages has not always been smooth. Earlier this year, a proposed USD61 billion aid package faced significant delays in Congress due to Republican opposition, but it was eventually approved in April.

As the United States approaches its next election, the future of its support for Ukraine remains a critical issue. The contrasting positions of the candidates highlight the potential for significant shifts in United States foreign policy depending on the election’s outcome, which could impact both the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and international relations more broadly.
