Qatar Airways engages in discussions to acquire 25 percent stake in Airlink
(MENAFN) Qatar Airways is reportedly engaged in discussions to acquire a 25 percent stake in South Africa's SA Airlink Pty Ltd, according to a recent report from a UK news agency. While the negotiations are underway, no formal agreement has yet been established between the two parties. Representatives from Qatar Airways and SA Airlink have chosen not to provide any comments regarding the ongoing discussions.
This development is in line with previous statements made by Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, the Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Airways. Back in May, during an interview, Al-Meer indicated that the airline was approaching the final stages of investing in a southern African carrier, though he did not disclose the name of the airline at that time. His comments suggested that Qatar Airways was keen on expanding its presence in the region.
Further confirming the discussions, Al-Meer reiterated the airline’s investment intentions at the Farnborough Airshow, though he still did not reveal the identity of the prospective partner. The ongoing talks reflect Qatar Airways' strategic interest in strengthening its foothold in the southern African aviation market.
The potential acquisition of a stake in SA Airlink would mark a significant move for Qatar Airways, enhancing its network and influence in the region. The absence of formal agreements and the lack of comments from both companies underscore the preliminary nature of the discussions, leaving the outcome of the negotiations still uncertain.
