Kamala Harris's election campaign raises USD200M initial week

(MENAFN) Vice President Kamala Harris's election campaign reported a strong start on Sunday, announcing that it had raised USD200 million in its first week of campaigning and recruited 170,000 new volunteers. Notably, two-thirds of the fundraising total came from first-time contributors in the 2024 election cycle, following President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race and his endorsement of Harris. This substantial financial boost underscores the high level of Democratic enthusiasm for Harris, who is currently polling neck-and-neck with Republican Donald Trump.

Mitch Landrieu, a co-chair of Harris’s campaign, praised the campaign's performance, describing it as one of the most impressive in recent political history. He indicated that this could lead to a very competitive race. At the end of June, Trump’s campaign had reported USD284.9 million in cash on hand, compared to USD240 million held by the Democratic campaign. Despite this, the strong fundraising and volunteer efforts reflect significant support for Harris’s candidacy.

Harris has already garnered support from a majority of delegates to the Democratic National Convention, positioning her as the likely nominee for president. Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison confirmed that the official nomination vote will take place on August 1, making Harris the presumptive nominee. Meanwhile, Harris has narrowed her potential running mates to three candidates: Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

As Harris becomes the likely Democratic nominee, Republican attacks have intensified. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who previously sought the Republican nomination before endorsing Trump, criticized Harris as “incredibly vapid” and predicted that Democrats would attempt to distance her from the Biden administration’s policies through a "blizzard of lies" on issues such as immigration. The heightened scrutiny and criticism reflect the increasing focus on Harris as the presidential race heats up.
