Iran declares 155,000 individuals employed across nearly 95,000 apiaries

(MENAFN) According to recent information from Iran’s Agriculture Ministry, a substantial workforce is dedicated to the country’s apiary industry, with 155,000 individuals employed across nearly 95,000 apiaries. Mohammad-Ebrahim Hassan-Nejad, the deputy minister for livestock products affairs, highlighted these figures in a recent statement. This significant number of workers underscores the importance of beekeeping to Iran's agricultural sector and economy.

In terms of global honey production, Iran holds a prominent position, being the third-largest producer in the world as reported by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This ranking reflects the scale and effectiveness of Iran’s beekeeping practices and the considerable output of honey from its extensive apiary network. The country’s robust honey production industry contributes significantly to its economy and international trade.

To further enhance honey production, Mokhtar Mohajer, chairman of the Animal Science Research Institute, has emphasized the need for increased output per colony. According to Mohajer, the Seventh National Development Plan (2022-2026) outlines a goal to raise honey production by three to four kilograms per colony. This target takes into account the diverse plant life and extensive pastures available throughout Iran, which provide essential resources for honey production.

In addition to honey, Iran’s apiary industry produces a variety of other bee-related products. Annually, the country generates 8,300 kilograms of royal jelly, 406 tons of pollen, 2,536 tons of beeswax, 247 tons of propolis, and 3,917 grams of bee venom. These figures reflect the breadth of Iran’s beekeeping industry and its role in producing a range of valuable bee products beyond just honey.
