Tunisia detains two people mixed up in killing attempt on Libyan PM consultant

(MENAFN) Tunisian authorities have apprehended two individuals suspected of involvement in the attempted assassination of Abdulmajid Elmlegta, an adviser to Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah. This development was confirmed by Libya's Ministry of Interior in a statement released on Wednesday, expressing gratitude to Tunisian counterparts for their collaborative efforts in pursuing and capturing the suspects.

According to the official announcement on Libya's Ministry of Interior's facebook page, Minister Imad Mustafa Trabelsi acknowledged the full cooperation extended by Tunisian Interior Minister Khaled Al Nouri in facilitating the arrest of individuals sought by Libyan intelligence services in connection with the failed assassination attempt on Elmlegta.

The incident, previously reported by Libya's Tripoli-based Public Prosecutor's Office in July, involved an explosive-laden vehicle targeting Elmlegta on Tripoli's Third Ring Road. Initial investigations revealed the involvement of four individuals, including two members of Libya's National Security Department within its Intelligence Services.

Following the thwarting of the assassination attempt by Libya's Al Radaa Forces for Countering Terrorism and Organised Crime, two primary suspects were apprehended. However, the remaining two suspects fled to Tunisia, where they were tracked down and detained this week. The successful operation was attributed to coordinated efforts between Libya and Tunisia, bolstered by support from the Arab Criminal Police Office and Interpol.

The collaboration underscores regional cooperation in combating cross-border criminal activities and maintaining security in North Africa. The arrests mark a significant step in the ongoing efforts to address security challenges and uphold stability in the region amidst heightened concerns over targeted violence and terrorism.
