Iraq inaugurates electricity transmission line from Turkey to cope with power shortages

(MENAFN) Iraq has announced plans to alleviate chronic power shortages by inaugurating a new electricity transmission line from Turkey, aimed at diversifying the country's energy sources. The 115-kilometre power line, which connects to the Kisik power plant west of Mosul, will supply 300 megawatts of electricity to Iraq's northern provinces of Nineveh, Salah al-Din, and Kirkuk. This initiative marks a strategic effort by Iraqi authorities to enhance connectivity with neighbouring countries and enhance energy security.

Prime Minister Mohamed Shia Al Sudani emphasized the significance of the new power line, describing it as a crucial step towards strengthening Iraq's energy infrastructure. The transmission line commenced operations recently, according to Ahmed Moussa, spokesperson for Iraq's electricity ministry, underscoring its immediate impact on addressing power deficits in the region.

Decades of conflict have severely impacted Iraq's infrastructure, leaving the country grappling with extensive power outages exacerbated during scorching summer months when temperatures soar above 50ºC. Many households endure limited access to mains electricity, prompting widespread reliance on private generators to sustain essential appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners.

Despite possessing substantial oil reserves, Iraq remains reliant on energy imports to meet domestic demand, particularly from neighbouring Iran, which intermittently reduces supplies. Sudani has consistently advocated for diversifying Iraq's energy sources as a strategic imperative to mitigate persistent electricity shortages.

In addition to the new power line from Turkey, Iraq has been exploring alternative energy supply routes, including initiatives to import electricity from Gulf countries as part of efforts to lessen dependence on Iranian gas. Earlier this year, Iraq initiated another significant electricity transmission project, establishing a 340-kilometre line from Jordan to Al Rutbah in the southwest, further demonstrating its commitment to enhancing energy diversification and resilience.

The introduction of the Turkish electricity transmission line represents a pivotal development in Iraq's ongoing efforts to bolster its energy infrastructure and improve living conditions for its citizens amidst enduring challenges.
