Israel makes first straight air attack on Yemen

(MENAFN) On Saturday, the Israeli military carried out its first major airstrike on Yemen’s port city of Hodeidah, targeting key facilities including the oil terminal. This unprecedented assault resulted in a massive blaze at the port, with storage tanks catching fire and fuel spilling into the area, further fueling the inferno. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) conducted the raid in retaliation for ongoing attacks against Israeli-linked civilian vessels and a series of long-range missile and drone strikes by the Houthi militant group based in Yemen.

According to a statement from the IDF, Israeli fighter jets targeted military assets of the Houthi regime at Hodeidah port in response to what they described as hundreds of recent attacks on Israel. The airstrike was depicted in online footage showing the oil terminal engulfed in flames, with the fire reportedly spreading and causing significant damage. Local media reports suggest that there were casualties resulting from the attack.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later defended the raid, asserting that the port was being used by the Houthis to receive weapons from Iran. The strike came amid heightened tensions following a recent drone attack on Tel Aviv, which resulted in one fatality and injuries to at least ten people near the United States Embassy office. The Houthis had claimed responsibility for the drone attack, describing it as a major military operation involving new technology designed to evade interception systems.
