Warring parties in Sudan resume discussions with UN envoy

(MENAFN) This week, ongoing discussions are taking place in Geneva involving a UN envoy and delegations from both warring parties in Sudan, with a focus on humanitarian aid and the protection of civilians. These talks come amid a backdrop of intense conflict that has persisted since April 2023, pitting the Sudanese regular army, led by Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), commanded by his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

Ramtane Lamamra, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's personal envoy for Sudan, initiated these discussions by inviting both the army and the RSF delegations to engage in dialogue. The talks began on Thursday and are structured in a "proximity format," meaning that Lamamra is meeting with each delegation separately, without direct interaction between the two sides. This method aims to facilitate communication while maintaining a degree of separation.

Throughout the weekend, Lamamra and his team held multiple meetings with representatives from both factions. According to UN spokeswoman Alessandra Vellucci, the discussions have been focused on two critical areas: humanitarian assistance and the safeguarding of civilians affected by the conflict. As the week progresses, the dialogue is set to continue, although no specific end date for the talks has been established. The delegations consist of senior representatives from both parties, including experts in humanitarian, security, and military fields, underscoring the complexity of the issues at hand.
