Pentagon declares US temporary pier in Gaza remains unanchored

(MENAFN) The temporary pier constructed by the U.S. military to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip remains unanchored, as confirmed by the Pentagon on Monday. Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh informed reporters that the pier, located at Israel's Port of Ashdod, has not been re-anchored due to unsuitable conditions over the weekend, and thus continues to remain in its current state. Singh explained that the commander is still evaluating the feasibility and timing of potentially re-anchoring the pier.

Singh further elaborated that although no specific timeline was set for the duration of operations, it was anticipated that the weather conditions and sea states would likely render the pier inoperable as summer progressed. Addressing queries about possible political issues hindering the re-anchoring, Singh clarified that the decision is predominantly influenced by environmental factors rather than political considerations.

Despite the challenges with the pier, Singh assured that the humanitarian aid, currently stationed in Cyprus or on U.S. ships, will reach the people of Gaza. This will be achieved either through the temporary pier if it can be re-anchored or via alternative routes through Ashdod. Since becoming operational on May 17, the pier has facilitated the delivery of over 8,100 metric tons, or approximately 20 million pounds, of humanitarian aid. This aid is transferred from the pier to a marshaling area where it is collected by humanitarian organizations for further distribution.

The USD230 million pier was established to enhance the delivery of urgently needed humanitarian assistance to Gaza. However, its operations have been paused several times due to various factors. The initiative to establish the sea route for delivering food and aid to Palestinians was ordered by U.S. President Joe Biden on March 8, in response to Israeli restrictions and ongoing conflict in the enclave.
