Grandchild of former-Egyptian leader says that no ‘memory loss’ in Africa regarding colonial history
(MENAFN) In a recent interview with the news agency, Gamal Abdel Nasser, grandson of Egypt's former president and a founding member of the African Legacy Forum, emphasized that European powers are neglecting the historical context of colonization in their contemporary interactions with Africa. His comments came in response to European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell's surprise at the support many Africans show for Russia. Borrell suggested that Europe needs a unified strategy to address information warfare and counteract this growing support.
Nasser reflected on the historical ties between African nations and Russia, noting the USSR's significant role in supporting liberation movements across the continent. He acknowledged that while the relationship with Russia has had its complexities, the legacy of European colonization remains far more contentious. “We have a much worse past with the colonizing nations of Europe,” he stated, highlighting the ongoing impact of historical grievances on current sentiments.
He criticized European countries for their ongoing political and military interference in Africa, asserting that local populations have not forgotten the injustices of the past. “If they want to work with us – OK, but we need them not to forget this past,” Nasser insisted, underlining the importance of acknowledging history in fostering meaningful partnerships.
This dialogue illustrates a growing awareness among African nations about their historical experiences and their implications for modern diplomacy. As relationships evolve, the acknowledgment of colonial legacies will be crucial for establishing trust and cooperation between Africa and Europe.
