Rich French possibly to relocate en masse

(MENAFN) In the wake of recent parliamentary elections, a significant number of France's affluent residents are contemplating leaving the country due to fears of political instability and the potential for increased taxes. According to Bloomberg, wealth managers report that the election results, which yielded a hung parliament with no party achieving an absolute majority, have left many wealthy individuals feeling anxious about their financial future.

The left-wing alliance, which secured the most seats, has raised alarms among high earners who worry that its campaign proposals—particularly regarding higher taxes—could soon become law. Many clients of wealth advisers are already taking action, with reports of increased capital transfers abroad and inquiries about potential expatriation.

Xenia Legendre, a managing partner at Hogan Lovells law firm in Paris, noted a growing trend among top executives seeking to protect their assets. Following the Brexit referendum, many bankers relocated to France, but the prospect of rising taxes is prompting them to consider moving again.

The New Popular Front (NFP), the left-wing coalition that emerged with the most seats, has pledged to impose taxes on corporate super profits and to reinstate a wealth tax targeting the rich. These proposed policies starkly contrast with the tax-friendly approach championed by President Emmanuel Macron, who has earned the nickname "president of the rich" due to his favorable policies for the wealthy.

Emmanuel Angelier, head of La Financiere d’Orion, expressed concern that if extreme policies are implemented, those who can afford to leave will do so, further diminishing France's attractiveness to both wealthy residents and foreign investors. He predicts that the rich may choose to relocate, contributing to a growing trend of emigration among France's elite.

This ongoing uncertainty regarding political direction and fiscal policy has created a precarious environment for the wealthy, leading many to weigh their options for securing their financial future outside of France. As these dynamics unfold, the potential exodus of affluent citizens could have significant implications for the country's economy and social landscape.
