Iranian official declares over 90 percent of elevator, escalator parts domestically made

(MENAFN) The head of the Lift and Escalator Component Manufacturers Association of Iran (LIEMA), Samad Shafahi, recently announced that over 90 percent of the components used in the country’s escalators and elevators are now domestically produced. Speaking on the sidelines of the 13th International Exhibition of Elevators, Escalators, Elevating Conveyors, and Accessories (IRAN LIFTEX 2024), he noted that only a small fraction—approximately one to two percent—of specialized elevators, mainly used in petrochemical plants and refineries, require imported parts. The vast majority of elevators and escalators in Iran are manufactured by local producers.

Shafahi highlighted that the country builds more than 50,000 elevators and 1,200 escalators annually, all achieved through the efforts of domestic manufacturers. He stated that over 500 production units are active in the elevator industry, with 350 officially registered as members of LIEMA, while the remaining units operate in various capacities.

Currently, more than 80,000 people are employed in the elevator and escalator sector, with around 30,000 directly involved in production, while others work across various sub-sectors. The ongoing exhibition, which began on July 10 at Tehran's Permanent International Fairgrounds, features participation from over 135 domestic and foreign companies, including representatives from China, Germany, Turkey, and Italy.

The exhibition has attracted several business delegations from countries such as Turkey, Algeria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, and Oman. One of the key features of the event includes B2B meetings aimed at fostering collaboration among the participating delegations and exhibitors, showcasing Iran's growing capabilities in the lift and escalator industry.
