Iran plans to construct new power plants to reach capacity of 22,000MW
(MENAFN) Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi, head of Iran's Power Generation, Distribution, and Transmission Company (Tavanir), announced plans by the Energy Ministry to construct new power plants across the country, aiming for a total capacity of 22,000 megawatts (MW). This ambitious project includes the development of renewable energy sources, with half of the new capacity—12,000 MW—dedicated to renewable power. The remaining 9,000 MW will come from cycle power plants.
Rajabi Mashhadi noted that significant investment has been made in the electricity sector over the past three years, with approximately three billion dollars allocated annually. The targeted power plants are expected to be commissioned within the next three years, contributing to the country's energy needs.
Statistics indicate that during the administration of the late President Ebrahim Raisi, Iran's electricity generation grew by 13.5 percent, surpassing that of several industrialized nations, including the UK and Italy. Recent figures show that Iran produced 382.9 terawatts/hour of electricity in 2023, marking a 4.3 percent increase compared to the previous year, when the country generated 367.1 terawatts/hour.
The growth rate of Iran's electricity generation in 2023 was nearly double the global average, which stood at a 2.5 percent increase, bringing the total worldwide generation to over 29,924 terawatts/hour. Notably, Iran's electricity output has exceeded that of various industrialized countries as well as other nations such as Turkey, Algeria, Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Thailand. This upward trend in electricity generation positions Iran as a significant player in the energy sector on the global stage.
