ADFD receives UN Award for Renewable Energy Initiatives in Small Island Developing States

(MENAFN) The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has been honored with the 2024 United Nations Partnership Award for Small Island Developing States in the Economic Category. This recognition is attributed to ADFD's successful initiatives supporting renewable energy projects across the Pacific and Caribbean Islands. Significantly, ADFD is the first institution from the Middle East and North Africa region to receive this prestigious award, representing the United Arab Emirates.

During the Global Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Partnerships for Small Island Developing States held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of ADFD, reaffirmed the organization's dedication to combating climate change. Al Suwaidi emphasized that international cooperation is integral to ADFD's mission of achieving global energy and sustainable development goals. He stated that ADFD remains committed to assisting small island developing states in their transition toward sustainable energy futures.

The two initiatives that earned ADFD this award involve a strategic collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), and the governments of 26 small island developing states, with a total funding of USD100 million from ADFD. These initiatives have been pivotal in accelerating the shift to renewable energy, decreasing reliance on fossil fuels, enhancing energy security, and broadening climate action efforts in the Caribbean and Pacific regions. Consequently, these efforts have facilitated sustainable economic growth and underscored the importance of strategic international partnerships in addressing global energy challenges.
