Doha, Qatar: In a commendable effort to promote environmental sustainability and raise awareness about plastic waste reduction, the General Cleanliness Department at the Ministry of Municipality, in association with Al Wakrah municipality and LuLu Hypermarket, successfully conducted a waste sorting programme from the source.

This event was part of an awareness campaign aligned with World Plastic Bags Free Day, held at LuLu Hypermarket Ezdan Oasis on July 1 and 2.

The primary objective of this initiative was to educate the public on the importance of reducing plastic bag usage and to encourage the proper sorting of waste, especially plastics, into recycling containers. As part of the campaign, LuLu Hypermarket distributed reusable bags and gifts to participants, demonstrating their commitment to sustainable practices. Notably, LuLu Hypermarket has long been a proponent of environmental responsibility, consistently using biodegradable bags in their stores.

During the event, municipality officials engaged with customers, providing valuable information on the proper sorting of waste into designated containers and the correct disposal of plastics. This educational effort is part of the Ministry of Municipality's broader initiative to reduce plastic use and foster environmental awareness within the community.

A few months ago, the Ministry of Municipality, represented by the General Cleanliness Department, launched the second phase of the waste sorting at source program. This phase involves the provision of specialized containers to households in various areas for the separate disposal of recyclable materials and organic waste. Blue containers are designated for recyclable materials such as glass, plastic, papers, and metals, while grey containers are for food waste and cleaning materials.

This waste sorting initiative is a testament to the Ministry's ongoing efforts to promote sustainability and enhance waste management practices across the country. By providing households with the necessary tools and knowledge, the Ministry aims to significantly reduce the environmental impact of waste and encourage more responsible consumption patterns among residents.

LuLu Hypermarket has also been at the forefront of sustainability initiatives, continually seeking innovative ways to reduce its environmental footprint. From the use of biodegradable bags to the promotion of reusable products, LuLu Hypermarket has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to supporting environmental causes and encouraging eco-friendly practices among its customers.

The Ministry of Municipality General Cleanliness Department remain dedicated to their mission of fostering a cleaner, greener environment. The successful waste sorting program and awareness campaign held in conjunction with World Plastic Bags Free Day are just one of many steps they are taking to ensure a sustainable future for the community.
