Attack on celebration in Brazil town square leaves 7 dead, 2 injured

(MENAFN) In a tragic incident early Thursday morning, armed assailants targeted a celebration at a town square in Vicosa do Ceara, Ceara state, leaving at least seven people dead and two injured, as confirmed by Military Police. According to reports, security cameras captured several vehicles arriving at the square, from which armed suspects emerged and forced multiple individuals to comply by placing their hands on their heads.

Witnesses recounted hearing a barrage of gunshots, estimated to be around 50, resulting in the deaths of both men and women at the scene. The two injured victims were swiftly transported to the municipal hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Authorities investigating the attack have yet to ascertain a definitive motive. However, they noted that one of the deceased victims was identified as wearing an ankle monitor typically used by individuals on parole or awaiting trial, hinting at potential connections to criminal activities.

This incident, bearing hallmarks of gang-related violence or organized crime rivalry, marks the second significant outbreak of violence in Vicosa do Ceara in recent years. Previously, the town experienced a similar violent episode in December 2021 when four individuals were fatally shot inside a residence.

Investigations are ongoing as law enforcement agencies seek to apprehend the perpetrators and understand the underlying factors contributing to such brazen acts of violence in the community.
