Convicts Offered Option To Join National Guard - Minister

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Convicted Ukrainians can file applications to serve in the National Guard.

That's according to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Ihor Klymenko, who spoke in an interview with Radio Liberty.

"We don't have any yet. But if they express such will, if commanders find such people in penitentiary facilities, then of course (they will be able to serve - ed.)," Klymenko noted.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs does not currently recruit soldiers in prisons, but this is not the principled position, he added.

"This is just the beginning of the process. First, these people will stay in separate teams within combat units. Secondly, we are involved only in the escorting of these persons, starting from the court rulings on parole and to the military draft centers, where we take them over in accordance with the law," the minister explained.

Klymenko also noted that about 70% of the National Guardsmen are in one way or another at the front as part of the Defense Forces.

As reported, on May 17, Volodymyr Zelensky signed the law on the introduction of parole in case of direct participation in defending the country, protecting its independence and territorial integrity.
