Qatar is rapidly establishing itself as one of the world's most captivating travel destinations, offering a unique blend of rich Arabian heritage and modern amenities that have enchanted visitors for years.
Record-Breaking Visitor Numbers
In 2023, Qatar surpassed the four million visitor mark, a significant milestone reflecting the country's growing appeal. The first four months of 2024 continued this trend, with more than two million visitors arriving, including an unprecedented 700,000 in January alone. This influx set a record for single-month arrivals, with approximately 44 percent of visitors coming from the GCC region.
Tourism: A Key Economic Driver
These impressive figures coincide with the launch of Qatar's Third Phase of the National Development Strategy 2024-2030, which outlines the next phase in achieving the Qatar National Vision 2030. The strategy positions tourism as a vital sector for economic diversification, aiming for sustainable growth. Qatar Tourism is focused on enhancing the country's infrastructure, promoting sustainable practices, and fostering cultural exchange to solidify its status as a premier destination.
Enhancing Visitor Experience
Qatar's national carrier, Qatar Airways, plays a pivotal role in this growth, connecting Doha to over 177 key business and leisure destinations across six continents. Recognised multiple times as Skytrax's Airline of the Year, Qatar Airways is renowned for its exceptional service and extensive network, making it a top choice for travelers.
Hamad International Airport, awarded World's Best Airport at the Skytrax World Airport Awards three times, further enhances the visitor experience. Qatar is also one of the most open countries in the Middle East, ranking eighth globally for visa facilitation, with citizens from 102 countries eligible for visas on arrival. The enhanced digital ecosystem for travelers complements these efforts, supporting Qatar's National Tourism Strategy 2030. This strategy aims to boost the tourism sector's GDP contribution to 12 percent by 2030 and increase domestic tourism spending three to fourfold, in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.
Innovative Campaigns and Collaborations
Qatar Tourism has spearheaded several initiatives to further promote tourism. In collaboration with the Saudi Tourism Authority, the 'Double the Discovery' campaign encourages travelers to explore both Qatar and Saudi Arabia, offering comprehensive city guides and detailed information on top attractions, shopping venues, and dining options. This initiative enhances the visitor experience and promotes cultural and historical exploration across both nations.
Additionally, Qatar Tourism, in partnership with Qatar Airways, offers stopover packages that provide visitors with 24-hour check-in facilities and customisable options such as airport assistance, transfers, and a variety of tours.
Thriving Cruise Sector
Qatar has also emerged as a premier cruise destination. The new Grand Cruise Terminal in Doha offers seamless connectivity to the city's key attractions, including the Corniche, Museum of Islamic Art, National Museum of Qatar, Msheireb Downtown Doha, and Souq Waqif. The 2023/24 cruise season saw 73 cruise visits with 347,000 passengers, featuring notable ships such as the Norwegian Dawn and Star Legend, which used Doha as a homeport. The season set a record with 199,863 cruise visitors, and the next season promises even more growth.
New Attractions and Experiences
2024 has seen the launch of several exciting attractions. The award-winning Our Habitas Ras Abrouq resort, located at the edge of the UNESCO-protected Al-Reem Biosphere Reserve, offers luxury and sustainable travel experiences with those willing to visit from inside or outside the country.
Meryal Waterpark on Qetaifan Island in Lusail is another highlight, featuring the 85-meter high Icon Tower and 36 waterslides, promising thrilling adventures for all visitors.
Looking Ahead
Qatar Tourism's strategic initiatives are set to further elevate Qatar's status as a top global travel destination. With a focus on sustainable development, enhanced infrastructure, and rich cultural experiences – Qatar is poised to attract even more visitors and create unforgettable experiences in the years to come.
