Amman, June 4 (Petra) - The Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (HCD) on Monday concluded two workshops aimed at discussing a draft plan to develop the educational system for deaf students in schools.
The event was part of the Assessment of Sign Language on Primary and Secondary Deaf Students and Those of Hard of Hearing project, funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to assess current sign language usage and create a plan for improvement.
The workshops brought together education officials, local authorities, sign language experts, and disability advocates for a collaborative effort.
Discussions centered on a draft plan to enhance educational programs for deaf students throughout Jordan.
Recognizing the importance of effective communication, participants emphasized the need to formally recognize Jordanian Sign Language as the official state language for the deaf community.
Additionally, they highlighted the need to expand the development of signs to encompass both academic and everyday terms. To bridge the communication gap between teachers and students, the workshops stressed the importance of equipping teachers with qualifications in sign language and effective teaching methods.
Finally, the project aims to strengthen the learning process for deaf students by integrating visual aids into educational curricula.
This initiative marks the first project in Jordan specifically focused on developing academic sign language. This development is expected to significantly improve the educational experience for deaf students in the country.
