World Bank Steps Up Climate-Health Investments To Combat Dual Crisis


(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 5 . The World bank haspledged to ramp up its investments in climate-health initiatives,Trend reports via the Bank.

Reportedly, this commitment comes as a response to theescalating threats posed by climate change to public health andwell-being.

Through its pioneering Climate and Health Program, the WorldBank aims to embed climate considerations within its extensive $34billion health portfolio, which spans operations in over 100countries.

The World Bank says it is dedicated to assisting countries infortifying their health systems to anticipate, detect, prepare for,and respond to climate-related risks and disasters. This effortinvolves implementing climate-informed surveillance andearly-warning systems, enhancing the capacity of health workforcein climate-health strategies, and bolstering the resilience ofhealthcare infrastructure.

Recognizing the imperative of reducing carbon footprints in thehealth sector, the World Bank is facilitating the transitiontowards low-carbon, high-quality service delivery. This entailsinitiatives such as adopting clean, renewable energy for healthcareinfrastructure and fleets, as well as promoting the use oflow-carbon medicines and equipment.

The World Bank is spearheading efforts to tackle the underlyingdrivers of climate change and its adverse impacts on health. Thisinvolves fostering collaboration across sectors to scale upinterventions in areas such as One Health, water, sanitation,hygiene (WASH), and energy efficiency.

The World Bank's proactive stance has already yieldedsignificant results, with substantial climate-related healthinvestments spanning more than 100 countries. Notably, 80 percentof these investments are channeled towards adaptationinterventions, including urgent nutrition support, establishment ofsurveillance systems, and the development of emergency responsecenters.
