Over 22 people die in multiple firings in US state of Maine

(MENAFN) Gunshots at many sites in the US state of Maine late on Wednesday claimed the lives of at least 22 individuals. A warning of an "active shooter" event in the town of Lewiston was released by the Maine State Police, as reported by a US-based news agency.

The shooter aimed at multiple locations, which included a restaurant and a bowling alley. A news agency located in the United States reported that approximately 50 to 60 individuals suffered injuries.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office released images of an individual armed with an assault rifle. Simultaneously, the city of Lewiston issued an order for residents to take shelter and pinpointed three specific areas under police investigation.

The individual believed to be the shooter is still evading capture, with law enforcement currently engaged in an active manhunt. Additionally, the Lewiston Police Department has designated Robert Card, aged 40, as a "person of interest" in connection with the shootings.

Card "should be considered armed and dangerous. Please contact law enforcement if you are aware of his whereabouts," the department declared.

Following what has been described as a "horrific attack," President Joe Biden has received a briefing and extended his complete support during a call with Maine Governor Janet Mills, Senators Angus King and Susan Collins, and Congressman Jared Golden, as confirmed by the White House. In response to the situation, public schools in Lewiston will remain closed on Thursday.

"There remains a lot of unknowns at this time. Information moves quickly but not always accurately," stated Jake Langlais, the superintendent of Lewiston Public Schools. He also said, “Please continue to shelter in place or get to safety.”
