Philippines officially raises diplomatic protest against China
(MENAFN) The Philippines has formally raised a diplomatic protest against China and summoned its ambassador in response to clashes involving Chinese maritime police vessels, leading to collisions with Philippine Navy and Coast Guard ships in the South China Sea. According to officials in Manila, these incidents occurred during a personnel rotation mission on the WW2-era Sierra Madre tank-landing ship on Sunday.
The Philippine government's National Task Force revealed that a collision between a China Coast Guard vessel and a Philippine naval resupply boat took place due to what they termed as "dangerous blocking maneuvers." Additionally, another collision reportedly occurred between a Chinese coast guard craft and a Philippine vessel in the Ayungin Shoal area.
During a press conference, Philippine foreign affairs spokeswoman Ma. Teresita Daza asserted, "Ayungin Shoal is part of our exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, and we have sovereign rights and jurisdiction over it." Consequently, Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian was summoned to the foreign ministry to address the incident. However, since he was not in Manila at the time, the note was delivered to his deputy, Zhou Zhiyong.
In response to these developments, Beijing has attributed the clashes to Philippine vessels, claiming they "intruded the waters of Ren’ai Jiao (Chinese name for Ayungin Shoal)'' and engaged in a dangerous collision with the Chinese Coast Guard and fishing vessels. The Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized that Ren'ai Jiao is part of China's Nansha Qiongdao Province and thus falls under Chinese territory.
A statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry urged the Philippines to heed their concerns, adhere to promises, and refrain from creating disturbances or provocations at sea. These incidents underscore the ongoing tensions and territorial disputes in the South China Sea, highlighting the need for diplomatic efforts to address the complex geopolitical situation.
