(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Two flights from Germany to the UAE were cancelled due to adverse weather conditions at Frankfurt Airport on Wednesday.

Emirates flight (EK 48) from Frankfurt to Dubai was cancelled following heavy rain that flooded the runways of Germany's busiest airport.

“Due to inclement weather, suspension of all ground activity and the brief closure of Frankfurt airport, Emirates flight EK48 bound for Dubai on 16 August was cancelled," reads a statement from the Dubai-based airline. "All passengers have been re-accommodated on today's EK 44 and EK 46 flights.”

Etihad Airways flight (EY008) from Frankfurt to Abu Dhabi on August 16 was also delayed as heavy rain caused flooding in the runways of Frankfurt Airport

“Guests booked on the flight have been provided hotel accommodation and assisted with their onward travel. We are monitoring the situation in Frankfurt,” said the spokesperson for the Abu Dhabi-based carrier.

Massive storm

According to reports, Germany's biggest airport was scrambling on Thursday“to book passengers on new flights after a massive storm caused dozens of cancellations, and also triggered flooding that deluged streets and toppled trees.”

Heavy rainfall caused flood on runways Wednesday evening as passengers were stuck on planes and unable to disembark. Ground handling was brought to a standstill for two hours and around 70 flights were cancelled while 23 planes headed for Frankfurt were diverted to other airports.

Frankfurt Airport authorities urged passengers to arrive no later than 2.5 hours before their flight time on Thursday.
