Uk Starts Evacuating Nationals From Niger

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) LONDON, Aug 2 (KUNA) -- UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said that the first group of Britons left Niamey, capital of Niger, for Paris aboard a French flight on Wednesday evening following last week coup in the African county.
The UK backs all regional efforts to restore democracy and stability in Niger, he said in a press release, commending the initiatives of the European Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECWAS) in this regard.
Secretary Cleverly noted that he has mulled over ways to resolve the crisis in Niger with a number of African leaders, notably presidents Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, of Nigeria and Ghana, respectively
Earlier today, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke by phone with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on the latest developments in Niger.
In a related development, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office updated its travel notice regarding Niger on the eve on a demonstration to mark the country's Independence Day.
FCDO advised against all travel to Niger, including the capital city of Niamey, for security reasons.
Noting that there are no commercial flights to or from Niger, the FCDO said "France is preparing the evacuation of its nationals and those European nationals who would like to leave the country." (end)
