(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, June 9 (KUNA) -- The European Union poured cold water on some media speculations hinting the revival of talks on the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
"We never comment on speculation. The role of the High Representative (Josep Borrell) is to be the coordinator of the JCPOA and the related activities and talks, and not the commentator if what is being said or written in the media," lead EU spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy, Peter Stano, told a news conference in Brussels on Friday.
"There is nothing new to report. We are still ready to exercise our role as the coordinator to the best capacity as we can," he said.
"The best kind of movement at this stage of the talks depend on the ability of the participants and the US to agree the final deal which was basically offered to them many , many months ago," he added.
In 2018, then-US President Donald Trump left the nuclear deal and re-imposed crippling economic sanctions on Iran's economy.
Iran and the remaining parties to the JCPOA (Russia, China, France, the UK and Germany) started talks in the Austrian capital Vienna in April 2021 but they came to a halt in August 2022 without any agreement.
In August 2022, Borrell had tweeted that "what can be negotiated has been negotiated, and it's now in a final text."
"However, behind every technical issue and every paragraph lies a political decision that needs to be taken in the capitals. If these answers are positive, then we can sign this deal," he added.
Since then, the EU has imposed several rounds of sanctions against Tehran on accusations of supplying Drones to the Russian military and for human rights abuses. (end)
