UN Condemns Attack on Turkish Diplomatic Convoy in Sudan Amid Ongoing Conflict

(MENAFN) The United Nations has strongly condemned the recent attack on a Turkish diplomatic convoy in Khartoum, the capital city of Sudan. This African nation has been grappling with a protracted conflict between the army and the paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for several weeks now, which has resulted in a high number of casualties and injuries. The UN's deputy spokesman, Farhan Haq, expressed his concern over the safety of diplomatic personnel and urged authorities to thoroughly investigate all attacks on them.

According to Turkish diplomatic sources, the official vehicle of the Turkish Ambassador to Sudan, Ismail Cobanoglu, was hit by gunfire in Khartoum last Saturday. Fortunately, no one was harmed in the attack, but the source of the gunfire remains unclear. Both the Sudanese army and the RSF paramilitaries have blamed each other for the attack.

Since April 15, more than 550 people have lost their lives, and thousands have been injured in the ongoing conflict between two rival generals, army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohammed Hamdan "Hemedti" Dagalo. The two sides have been at odds with each other for several months over the integration of the RSF into the armed forces, which is a critical requirement of Sudan's transition agreement with political groups.

This conflict has further exacerbated the political instability in Sudan, which has been without a functioning government since fall 2021 when the military ousted Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok's transitional government and imposed a state of emergency. Political forces have denounced this move as a "coup," leading to a worsening of the situation in the country. The UN has called for an immediate end to the violence and for all parties to engage in constructive dialogue to find a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
