Serbian President Calls for Crackdown after School Shooting
(MENAFN) Following the tragic shooting incident in Belgrade, Serbian President Aleksandr Vucic has called for a comprehensive crackdown on gun ownership and violent media content. The shooting, which claimed the lives of eight children and a school security guard, was allegedly carried out by a 14-year-old student using his father's gun at the Vladislav Ribnikar Elementary School.
In response to the incident, President Vucic has outlined a ten-point plan to address gun violence in the country. The plan includes a two-year moratorium on new weapons licenses, with the exception of those used for hunting. Additionally, an audit of all existing firearms permits will be carried out to determine how the recipient obtained their weapon and how it is being stored.
President Vucic has proposed severe punishment for those who allow minors to obtain firearms, as well as those who deliberately train young people in the use of firearms. He has also suggested that shooting ranges should be closely monitored to prevent access by minors and individuals with criminal convictions.
The President's proposals come amid growing concern about gun violence in Serbia, which has seen a number of high-profile shootings in recent years. The issue of violent media content has also been a subject of debate, with critics arguing that exposure to violent video games and films may contribute to a culture of violence.
The proposed crackdown on gun ownership is likely to face opposition from some quarters, particularly among those who view firearms as a fundamental right. However, President Vucic has emphasized the need to take tough action to prevent further tragedies such as the one that occurred in Belgrade.
The President's ten-point plan is expected to be presented to the Serbian parliament for consideration in the coming weeks. While it remains to be seen how effective the proposed measures will be in reducing gun violence, the incident in Belgrade has underscored the need for action to address this pressing issue.
