TN govt withdraws 12-hour workday norm for factory workers Chennai, May 2 (KNN) Tamil Nadu chief Minister M K Stalin on Monday informed that the state government has decided to withdraw the Factories (Amendment) Act 2023, which extended the working hours to 12 a day.
Addressing May Day celebrations at May Day Park, the Chief Minister stated that the Factories (Amendment) Act 2023, which permitted industries to work up to 12 hours a day, up from the previously 8 hours, has been repealed in the benefit of workers.
"We will not compromise on the welfare of the workers under any circumstances. Industries should grow and workers should prosper," he said.
Stalin pointed out that information on the present status of the bill would be communicated to all the legislators soon.
“The Factories (Amendment) Act 2023 was brought in with the aim to attract investments to the state and to provide employment opportunities to the youth,” the CM added.
The Tamil Nadu Assembly had passed the bill on April 21.The bill was passed by voice vote as the ruling DMK enjoyed a majority in the House.
