At the inaugural edition of the Al Ain International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition 2025, the spotlight was turned to one of the region's most admired symbols of heritage and endurance - the Arabian Saluki.

Known for its grace, intelligence, and unmatched hunting instincts, the Saluki continues to capture the attention of breeders, hunters, and visitors from across the UAE and beyond.

For centuries, the Arabian Saluki has been more than just a hunting dog; it has been a loyal companion shaped by the demands of the desert. Its ability to navigate harsh terrain, sprint at exceptional speeds, and remain loyal to its handler has cemented its place in Emirati culture. Today, that legacy continues through dedicated breeders who work tirelessly to preserve the purity of the breed.

Among the exhibitors is renowned breeder Abduljalal Samina, who explains that a true Saluki is“born with the passion for the chase.”

He told Khaleej Times "the Saluki's value is not determined by price but by lineage, performance, and the bond it forms with its owner.“Some dogs are priceless,” he says, noting that top-tier Salukis can reach impressive achievements in both beauty and speed competitions.

The exhibition floor showcases various Saluki categories ranging from show-quality dogs to those trained for high-speed hunting and racing. Judges evaluate a combination of physical attributes and behaviour: body structure, agility, stance, muscle definition, and the dog's natural response to its handler.

Breeders emphasise that the Saluki's elegance is matched only by its endurance. Whether sprinting across open desert or tracking fast-moving prey, the Saluki remains one of the most capable hunting dogs in the world.

Beyond the technical aspects, the exhibition highlights the cultural significance of the breed. For many Emiratis, raising Salukis is a family tradition passed down through generations. The dogs symbolise patience, strength, and the intimate relationship between humans and the desert.

As visitors walk through Hall 2, they encounter not just dogs on display but living chapters of Emirati history-each Saluki telling a story of loyalty, skill, and timeless desert heritage. And as interest in the breed continues to grow, events like the Al Ain International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition play a crucial role in preserving and celebrating this iconic symbol of the UAE's identity.
