Israeli Air Strike Kills Two Syrian Civilians
(MENAFN) Two Syrian civilians were killed in an Israeli air strike on Tuesday, marking the fourth such attack on government-held areas of Syria in less than a week. The state news agency, SANA, reported that the air strike occurred at 00:15 (2115 GMT Monday) and resulted in the death of two civilians. The attack, which came from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeted some points in the vicinity of Damascus and the southern region. SANA also claimed that the Syrian air defense intercepted most of the missiles.
Israel has launched hundreds of air strikes on Syrian territory since the start of the civil war more than a decade ago. These attacks have targeted primarily Iran-backed forces, Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, and Syrian army positions. However, this most recent attack also resulted in the death of two civilians. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the same death toll and stated that Israel fired "barrages of missiles targeting military areas controlled by Iran-backed groups and regime air defense."
According to the British-based monitor, the missiles targeted the vicinity of Damascus International Airport and an Iranian complex near the Sayyida Zeinab area. The monitor also reported that an Israeli missile targeted a regime radar in the countryside of Sweida, while another fell on a glass factory in the Al-Kiswah area of the Damascus countryside.
The repeated air strikes by Israel on Syrian territory have escalated tensions in the region and have been a major concern for the Syrian government. The civilian casualties have also raised criticisms from activists and human rights organizations. The situation highlights the ongoing violence and insecurity in Syria, which has been ravaged by a civil war for over a decade.
