Islamic Center Of Washington, DC, A Distinguished Landmark For Nearly 80 Years

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) Washington, March 30, 2023, SPA – The Islamic Center of Washington, D.C., is a mosque and Islamic cultural Center that has been a prominent historical landmark for nearly 80 years. The Center is visited by various Muslim communities during the month of Ramadan, in particular, including students and Saudi residents, to perform the daily prayers, Tarawih prayers, and to have the daily Iftar meal.
The Islamic Center was founded by the ambassadors of Islamic countries in 1944 and currently accommodates 1,500 worshipers. It was officially inaugurated by former U.S. President Eisenhower and has since been visited by several former presidents, including former U.S. President George Bush.
The Center's Imam and director, Dr Abdullah Khouj, said in a statement to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) that the Center enjoyed full support and supervision over many years from the Saudi leadership, offering the Muslim community in Washington a place where they can practice their religious rituals.
Dr Khouj said that the Center is keen to make Muslims residing in or visiting Washington feel the spirituality of Ramadan as if it were in their Islamic countries, adding that Ramadan Iftar is highly organized and offers the most important known Ramadan items, as well as Suhoor in the last ten days, adding that the Saudi Embassy in The U.S. provides boxes of dates and other items in the framework of its support and concern for all Islamic communities.
Dr Khouj pointed out that the number of Muslims living in the United States of America is estimated at 9 to 11 million people, revealing that the Center had received 80 people who declared their conversion to Islam during the past month alone. He explained that one of the most important goals of the Center is to answer questions about the concept of Islam in coordination with the U.S. State Department.
