Amateur Gold Digger Discovers 4.6kg Gold Rock Worth USD160,000 in Australia

(MENAFN) An amateur gold digger in Australia has made a significant discovery, finding a 4.6kg rock containing gold worth about $160,000 while using a budget metal detector in the goldfields of Victoria state.[1] The man's remarkable find is considered to be a "once-in-a-lifetime" discovery in the region where the country's gold rush took place in the 1800s.

The specimen was bought by Darren Kamp, the owner of a prospecting store in Geelong near Melbourne, who valued it before purchasing it. Kamp, who has been in the business for 43 years, described the rock as the biggest he had ever seen, calling it a "once-in-a-lifetime" find.

Kamp explained that people typically come to his store with rocks that look like gold, but are actually "fools gold." He recalled the amateur gold digger dropping the rock into his hand and asking, "Do you think there's A$10,000 ($6,600) worth in it?" Kamp replied, "Try A$100,000 ($66,000)." However, even that estimate was low, as the 4.6kg rock contained about 2.6kg of gold.

Australia is known to have the world's largest gold reserves, and the country has yielded many of the world's biggest nuggets in the past.
