Apple CEO Tim Cook Meets with China's Minister of Commerce to Discuss Industrial, Supply Chain Stabilization
(MENAFN) Apple CEO Tim Cook recently met with China's Minister of Commerce, Wang Wentao, to discuss Apple's development in China and the stabilization of the industrial and supply chains. A statement from China's Ministry of Commerce revealed that the two sides exchanged views on such issues. However, Apple declined to comment on Cook's activities in mainland China. Cook was one of the top American executives who attended the China Development Forum over the weekend.
The meeting between Cook and Wang comes after months of lockdowns and Covid restrictions in China. Last year, images and videos of workers escaping lockdown restrictions at Foxconn's major iPhone plant in China went viral on social media, causing concerns about the country's industrial and supply chains. Communist Party officials have made it a top priority to reassure corporate leaders and assuage their concerns about production and reliable output in China.
In a statement from Wang's ministry, it was revealed that China is committed to promoting high-level opening-up and steadily promoting rules, regulations, management, standards, and other institutional opening-up. The meeting between Cook and Wang is a testament to China's efforts to maintain a positive relationship with Apple and reassure the company of its commitment to a stable industrial and supply chain.
The meeting also comes at a time when Apple has reportedly been working to move some production out of China. Major supplier Foxconn is set to open a massive factory presence in Bengaluru, India, indicating that Apple is exploring other options for production outside of China. Despite this, Apple remains a significant player in China's tech industry and has continued to invest in the country's market.
