US President Expresses Concerns over Israel's Judicial Overhaul

(MENAFN) US President Joe Biden has expressed concerns over Israel's planned judicial overhaul and has called for a compromise after Israelis protested against the proposed reforms. During a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Mr Biden emphasized the importance of having genuine checks and balances in democratic societies and pursuing fundamental changes with the broadest possible base of popular support.

Mr Netanyahu, who leads one of the most right-wing coalitions in Israel's history, has been pursuing changes to the judiciary that would give his government greater influence in selecting judges and limit the Supreme Court's ability to strike down legislation. However, the plan has led to weeks of demonstrations, with hundreds of Israeli reservists in Israel's elite military and intelligence units joining the protests on Sunday.

In response to the concerns raised by President Biden, Mr Netanyahu assured him that Israel's democracy was healthy, according to his office. Nevertheless, Mr Biden reiterated that democratic values must remain a hallmark of the US-Israel relationship, underscoring his belief that genuine checks and balances are essential for strengthening democratic societies.

The proposed changes to Israel's judiciary have sparked controversy and raised concerns about the country's democracy. However, the calls for compromise from President Biden may provide an opportunity for dialogue and a resolution to the ongoing protests.
