Doha: The Ministry of Commerce and industry (MoCI), in coordination with the Ministry of Municipality and Widam Food Company (Widam), has announced the joint national initiative to encourage local production and subsidise sheep meat prices for the blessed month of Ramadan 2023.
The sales period will start on Saturday, March 18, and will continue until the end of the holy month.
The initiative aims to ensure the availability of sheep meat to citizens during Ramadan at affordable prices, and to create a balance between supply and demand to ensure stable market prices.
Widam will provide about 30,000 local sheep to be sold at reduced prices to citizens (two sheep per citizen).
The price of the local sheep weighing between 30 and 35 kilograms or more is priced at QR900.
To make the purchase, citizens are required to present their original ID cards at Widam-affiliated slaughterhouses in Al Khor, Umm Salal, Al Wakra, and Al Shahaniya, or through the electronic application of Widam.
There is an additional fee of QR16 for the slaughtering, cutting, and packaging, and QR34 for porters, to be purchased as separate coupons. Home delivery service is also available for an additional fee of 15 riyals.
In order for MoCI to ensure that this meat reaches the citizens, it was stipulated that the slaughter be carried out immediately in slaughterhouses to ensure the quality of meat and that it reaches the target group of this initiative.
The Widam Food Company will provide an air-conditioned tent for the beneficiaries of this initiative, divided into areas for men, women, and the elderly.
MoCI continues to intensify its inspection campaigns on sales outlets to ensure the availability of live sheep and other foodstuffs in the markets. All necessary measures are being taken to combat commercial fraud, protect competition, and prevent monopolistic practices to safeguard consumer rights.
Slaughterhouses are asked to adhere to the precautionary requirements, stressing that all legal measures will be taken in line with Law No. (8) of 2008 regarding Consumer Protection.
Consumers are urged to report any violations or infringements through call center 16001, and to send complaints and suggestions through its communication or social media channels.
