Meta Platforms Inc. considers decentralized social network to compete with Twitter Inc.

(MENAFN) Meta Platforms Inc. is considering the creation of a decentralized social network for sharing text updates that could directly compete with Twitter Inc., according to a company spokesperson. The idea behind the new network is to provide a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests. In an email statement to Reuters, the spokesperson said, "We're exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates."

The news was first reported by Indian business news website Moneycontrol.com, citing sources. According to the report, Meta's new content app would support ActivityPub, the decentralized social networking protocol that powers Twitter-rival Mastodon and other federated apps. Unlike centralized social networks like Twitter and Facebook, decentralized platforms like Mastodon are installed on thousands of computer servers, largely run by volunteer administrators who join their systems together in a federation.

Meta's new app will reportedly be Instagram-branded and allow users to register or login through their Instagram credentials. This move could be seen as an attempt by Meta to diversify its portfolio and expand its reach beyond its current social media platforms. It could also be an attempt to capitalize on the growing trend of decentralized social networks, which offer more control to users over their data and privacy.

If successful, this new decentralized social network could provide a platform for creators and public figures to share content without the fear of censorship or control by a single company. It could also be a potential competitor to Twitter, which has faced criticism over its handling of content moderation and censorship. As Meta continues to explore the development of this new network, it remains to be seen how it will impact the social media landscape and the future of online communication.
