Russia stats Latvia neglecting obligations to secure linguistic rights of minorities

(MENAFN) On Monday, Russia alleged that Latvia disregarded its responsibilities to uphold and defend the language rights of national minorities.

The Russian Embassy in Riga said on Telegram, "The Latvian administration is flagrantly rejecting its duty to preserve and defend the linguistic rights of the national minority. Its goal is to remove the Russian language from all domains of public life."

According to the statement, the decision was made in response to a verdict by the Latvian Constitutional Court that prohibited Russian language instruction at private colleges.

The statement read: "The EU Court of Justice delivered a recommendation to the local authorities in September 2022 to reconsider language limitations in commercial educational institutions, which are of a vividly discriminatory nature.

It was asserted that teaching in Russian, as opposed to teaching in other EU official languages, like as English, "poses a threat" to the Latvian language in higher education.

Is there anything else one should be aware of regarding the "absence" of racial prejudice in Latvia, it continued.

The Baltic nation, which was once a part of the Soviet Union, has long had tense relations with Russia.

The Saeima, the Latvian parliament, forbade the teaching of Russian in all schools and in higher education in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Additionally, Russia was labeled as a "state supporter of terrorism."

Although all official websites are in Latvian, the nation no longer grants Russians entry visas.
