(MENAFN- Hip Hop-24) NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called for strengthening security cooperation with South Korea to face global challenges.
"The most important message is that I strongly believe that we need to strengthen the partnership between South Korea and NATO because the security situation has become more interdependent," Stoltenberg said, in an exclusive interview Friday with the South Korean "Yonhap" agency, before his visit to South Korea and Japan.
The Secretary-General of NATO added that "what is happening in Asia and the Indo-Pacific region is of interest to Europe and NATO."
"NATO will remain the regional alliance of North America and Europe, but our region is affected by global threats and challenges," he said.
"We need to address these global threats and challenges, including from China, and one way to do that is, of course, to work more closely with partners in the region," Stoltenberg was quoted as saying by Yonhap.
Stoltenberg described North Korea as a "global security threat".
The NATO chief expressed his intention to invite South Korean President Yoon Sok-yol to attend this year's NATO summit, which will be held on July 11-12 in Lithuania.
NATO Secretary General is scheduled to arrive in Seoul on Sunday for a two-day visit, during which he will meet South Korean President Yoon Sok-yul, Foreign Minister Park Jin, National Defense Minister Lee Jong-sub, and other senior officials.
Then, on Monday, he will head to the Japanese capital, Tokyo, on a visit that will last until February 1, with the aim of meeting Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and other senior officials.
