Qatar-based youth climate advocate and co-founder and executive director of the Arab Youth Climate Movement Qatar (AYCMQ), Neeshad Shafi has been selected as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Climate 2022/23 by Apolitical, a British non-profit organisation and global network for the government helping public servants find the ideas, people and partners they need to solve complex challenges.

Apolitical published the list to mark the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), held in Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt.

“Neeshad Shafi is a young environmental activist who raises awareness about climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals,” Apolitical stated about the climate advocate selected under the youth category.

“Since 2012, he has been active in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change negotiations and has been influential in promoting youth involvement in action against climate change. He works to transform environmental policy. He is a member of policy working groups at World We Want 2030, the Civil Society Consultation for the UN Development System Review Process and the United Nations Environment Programme West Asia,” Apolitical added.

Shafi joins Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, renowned broadcaster and natural historian David Attenborough and many others on the list. In a statement to The Peninsula, Shafi expressed his pride in making the prestigious list.

“I'm deeply honoured to be listed in the 100 influential for 2022-2023 list with peers and inspirational climate advocates, scientists and diplomats,” Shafi said.

“Indeed too proud to represent Qatar and the Arab world in our common fight against climate change. I hope my representation helps elevate youth voices from the Arab region and encourage more young people to be more involved in grassroots climate action activities in their respective countries in the Middle East,” he added.

Through AYCMQ, Shafi has led a group of renowned climate game-changers, bringing awareness to the challenges faced by Arab nations and steps to tackle them. AYCMQ has carried out several initiatives in the community – the latest being a carbon footprint tracking application, a first in the region.
